Lucknow Pravasi series - Part 3
Clock Tower, Picture Gallery & Satkhanda

Through the "Lucknow Pravasi" series, we have pravas to the historical tourist places of Lucknow city. In part 2 of this series, we explored the historical landmarks of Lucknow or Avadh architecture, Bada Imambara, and Rumi Darwaza. Apart from this, I have also taken pravas to other historical places around the Imambara complex. This blog is of that pravas.

Hussainabad Clock Tower/Ghanta Ghar
After visiting Bada Imambara and Rumi Darwaza with some rest, I proceeded to the nearby Hussainabad Clock Tower. The clock tower was built by Nawab Naseer-Ud-Din Haidar in 1881 on the occasion of the arrival of Sir George Cooper, the first Lieutenant Governor of the United Province of Avadh. It is known as the tallest clock tower in India. Roskell Payne has created the design of this 67-meter-high structure and it is in the style of Victorian and Gothic Architecture.

Gunmetal has been used to make the parts of the watch, and the dial of the watch is in the shape of a 12-petal flower. This a fine example of Britisher's artistic and structural skill. It is also called Ghanta Ghar.

Picture Gallery and Lake
Adjacent to the clock tower is a building built by Nawab Mohmmad Ali Shah in the 19th century. Which is currently famous as "Picture Gallery".

This gallery has excellent drawings of Nawabs of Avadh in traditional dress, which depict the culture and lifestyle of the royal family of that time. A place that fascinates history and art lovers. Just in front of the gallery is a small lake with steps.

Satkhanda
A grand four-storied building next to the lake attracts our attention. That is Satkhanda. From the name, it seems that this building should be of seven storeys or floor. Actually, this building is incomplete. It is said that Nawab Mohammad Ali Shah started constructing this building to watch the moon.

Satkhanda

But during his sudden death, only four floors of Satkhanda could stand. After his death, this building was considered inauspicious and due to this, the construction of Satkhanda remained incomplete.

That's it for today's Pravas. But I have explored many more historical landmarks in Husainabad and to read other blogs in this series, click here at Lucknow Pravasi.
